Heat rises up my neck and I’m prickling. I want to scratch until I bleed.

‘You ran out of toilet roll.’

My heart bangs and I’m sure they can hear it but DS Brindle gives a little laugh. ‘Right, on to the next.’

DC Collins places the toilet roll tube on the worktop next to the apple crumble and I’m trying with all I’ve got to control the urge to tremble like a dog on Bonfire Night.

They leave as quickly as they came and before long, I hear them heading out towards the stairs. I dash to the bathroom and kneel over the toilet bowl, emptying my stomach. Leaning back against the wall trying to cool down, I close my eyes as sweat drips down my forehead. I feel as though I’m spinning. Simon and Dan are dead. My memory is blank on the nights both of them were murdered and how did that bauble get into Dan’s apartment? No more drinking. Not one drink, ever again. I need to clear my head if I’m to work out what’s going on around here.

My phone buzzes with an email. It’s Forge.
